A1.1 - BEGINNER 1

Standard

Welcome, beginners! You've decided to learn French, and we're excited to be part of your journey. As a complete beginner, you're brimming with enthusiasm, and we're here to guide you through your first steps into a new language and culture. Our immersive approach will have you speaking French from day one, helping you quickly grasp the basics and build a solid foundation.

In this course, you’ll dive into:

  • Greetings and Introductions (e.g., Bonjour, je m'appelle Jean)
  • Classroom Interactions (e.g., Pouvez-vous répéter s'il vous plaît ? Merci !)
  • Essential French Grammar – a simple introduction to verbs (action words) and nouns (people, places, things)
  • Practical Communication – using numbers in everyday situations (e.g., Une baguette, deux croissants et trois chouquettes, s'il vous plaît)

Get ready to immerse yourself in French and have fun while learning!

Course Material: COSMOPOLITE 1 (first half of the book). You will continue using this textbook in the A1.2 course next year.

French for Travellers – A1 Beginner

Planning a trip to a French-speaking country? This French for Travellers course is designed for A1 beginner students who want to feel more confident and independent while travelling.

You will learn practical, everyday French to help you:

  • make bookings and check in to accommodation,
  • order food and drinks at cafés and restaurants,
  • ask for directions and get around with ease,
  • ask for tourist information and local tips.

The course also focuses on basic listening comprehension, essential pronunciation, and key survival phrases. Along the way, you’ll discover useful cultural insights to help you interact politely and comfortably with locals and better understand French customs while travelling.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to manage common travel situations and enjoy your holiday with greater confidence and enjoyment.

No prior knowledge of French required.

Each level is structured across approximately four terms, with each term lasting 9 weeks.

1. Beginner 1 

 A1.1 level 

At the end of this course, you'll be able to understand and use familiar every day expressions and very basic phrases. You will be able to  introduce yourself and others as well as ask and answer questions. 

2. Beginner 2 

A1.2 level 

At the end of this course, you'll be able to interact in a simple way in short conversation.

3. Elementary 1 

A2.1 level

At the end of this course, you'll be able to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).


4. Elementary 2 

A2.2 level 

At the end of this course, you'll be able to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.  

5. Elementary 3 

 A2.3 level

At the end of this course, you'll be able to describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

6.Intermediate 1

B1.1 level 

At the end of this course, you'll be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. You'll be able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.  


7. Intermediate 2

B1.2 level 

At the end of this course, you'll be able to produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. You'll be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions.


8. Intermediate 3

B1.3 level

At the end of this course, you'll be able to produce more complex connected text on familiar topics. You'll be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

9. Advanced 1

B2.1 level 

At the end of this course, you'll be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. You'll be able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

10. Advanced 2

B2.2 level

At the end of this course, you'll be able to understand a wide range of longer texts, and start to recognise implicit meaning. You'll be able to  express yourself spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. You'll be able to use language for social and professional purposes. You will be able to produce clear and detailed text on a wide range of subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns and connectors.

11. Advanced 3

B2.3 level

At the end of this course, you'll be able to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. You'll be able to  express yourself fluently and spontaneously. You'll be able to use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. You will be able to produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
